Tub-to-shower conversion for safer access

An unused guest tub became a low-curb walk-in shower with grab bars, a handheld head and a bench — safer to use and visually twice the room.

Walk-in shower conversion with tiled walls, grab bars and a handheld shower head replacing an old tub

The situation

What we were solving

The homeowners were planning to stay in the house long term and could no longer safely step over a high tub wall. The bathroom was small, so anything that ate floor space was off the table.

The work we performed

  • Removed the tub and surrounding surround down to studs
  • Reframed the drain and installed a low-curb sloped shower pan
  • Waterproofed the enclosure and set full-height wall tile
  • Installed blocking with code-rated grab bars and a fold-down bench
  • Fitted a slide-bar handheld shower head and a frameless glass panel

The outcome

The bathroom is now usable without assistance, and removing the tub visually opened up a room that could not be made physically larger.

We can finally use the guest bathroom without worrying. It looks bigger too, which we did not expect.
